How it works
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and how many people are sharing. The calculator works in cents, the same way a receipt does:
Total per person = total ÷ number of people, rounded to the cent
The tip per person is the tip divided by the number of people, also rounded to the cent.
Example
Dinner for three comes to $64.50 and you want to leave 20%.
- Tip: 64.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $12.90
- Total: 64.50 + 12.90 = $77.40
- Each person pays: 77.40 ÷ 3 = $25.80
Notes and assumptions
- Rounding: per-person amounts are rounded to the cent. When the total can’t be split evenly — $100 between three people, for example — the shares add up to a cent or two more or less than the total. The calculator shows a note when that happens, so one person can round up.
- Before or after tax: many people tip on the amount before sales tax; others tip on the total. Enter whichever amount you want to base the tip on.
- Service charges: some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for larger groups. Check your receipt before adding a tip on top.
- The calculator does not store your bill. Values you enter only appear in the page address so you can share the split with your group.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip in the U.S.?
For table service, 15% to 20% is common, and many people tip 20% or more for great service. For counter service, delivery or a quick drink, amounts vary more — there is no single rule, so choose what feels fair.
Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?
Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous. The difference is usually small.
How do I split the bill if people ordered different amounts?
This calculator splits evenly. If orders were very different, calculate each person’s tip on their own share: use the calculator once per person with their subtotal and 1 as the number of people.
Why don’t the per-person amounts add up exactly?
Money can’t be divided below one cent. When the total isn’t divisible by the number of people, each share is rounded, and the rounded shares can differ from the total by a few cents.
