How crypto capital gains are calculated

Under IRS Notice 2014-21, cryptocurrency is treated as property for federal tax purposes, so every trade, sale, or exchange triggers a taxable event. To calculate profit or loss, subtract your cost basis from net proceeds. The Veloxcalc Crypto Profit Calculator automates this for buy/sell transactions, accounting for fees and FIFO/LIFO lot-matching methods. For US taxpayers, accurate records are essential because the IRS requires reporting every disposition on Form 8949 and Schedule D. All calculator outputs are rough estimates only and not tax or legal advice.

Buy/sell fees and cost basis

Your cost basis includes the purchase price plus any fees or commissions required to acquire the asset. For example: buy 0.5 BTC at $30,000 → $15,000 base cost. A 0.5% buy fee ($75) raises the total cost basis to $15,075. Selling that same 0.5 BTC at $50,000 produces $25,000 gross, but a 0.5% sell fee ($125) leaves $24,875 net proceeds. The true economic gain is approximately $9,800, an ROI of roughly 65%. The calculator separates gross and net profit so users can see how exchange fees erode returns.

Staking rewards and tax treatment

When you receive staking rewards from proof-of-stake block rewards, liquidity pools, or lending platforms, the IRS generally treats the fair market value of tokens at receipt as ordinary income—even if you never sell. If you later sell, you also owe capital gains on any price appreciation. The Veloxcalc calculator lets you input staking income separately to estimate ordinary tax alongside capital gains. IRS guidance on staking continues to evolve, so consult a qualified tax professional.

Short-term vs. long-term US tax estimates

Short-term capital gains (ordinary income brackets)

Crypto held for one year or less generates short-term gains taxed at ordinary federal income tax rates (10% to 37% for 2026). In our example, a $9,800 short-term gain in the 22% bracket yields an estimated federal tax of roughly $2,156. State taxes and the 3.8% NIIT may also apply to higher earners.

Long-term capital gains (0/15/20% federal)

Holdings sold after more than one year qualify for 0%, 15%, or 20% long-term rates based on taxable income. The same $9,800 gain at a 25% blended long-term estimate produces approximately $2,450 in federal tax. Many middle-income taxpayers qualify for the 15% rate, which is significantly lower than most short-term brackets. The calculator lets you toggle holding periods to compare tax outcomes.

Why you should track every trade

The SEC and IRS both emphasize detailed records of every acquisition and disposition. Missing a single trade can cause underreporting, overpayment, or an IRS audit. The Veloxcalc Crypto Profit Calculator organizes trade data and generates rough estimates but is not a substitute for professional tax preparation, accounting, or legal advice. All figures are for educational and estimation purposes only.
