Personal loan amortization and true APR

This US Personal Loan Calculator uses the standard amortization formula for fully amortizing installment loans with equal monthly payments — the same structure used by online lenders, credit unions and banks nationwide for unsecured personal loans, debt consolidation loans and home improvement loans.

M = P × r·(1+r)n / [(1+r)n − 1]
where P = loan amount, r = APR ÷ 1200, n = number of monthly payments

Personal loans are almost always simple-interest, fully amortizing and fixed-rate, meaning each monthly payment is identical and the loan balance reaches exactly zero on the final payment. This makes them predictable and easy to budget around.

APR vs. interest rate — why they differ

The advertised interest rate is only part of the picture. The APR (Annual Percentage Rate) reflects the interest rate plus any finance charges (origination fees, document fees, discount points) spread across the loan term. When comparing offers from different lenders, always compare APRs — not just the stated interest rate — because that is the legally mandated apples-to-apples figure.

Origination fees and the cost of credit

An origination fee is a one-time, upfront charge that many lenders deduct from the loan proceeds before the money lands in your bank account. Origination fees in the US market typically range from 1 % to 8 % of the loan amount, charged most often by online marketplace lenders and peer-to-peer platforms. Banks and credit unions sometimes waive them for customers with existing relationships.

How origination fees affect the money you receive

If you borrow $25,000 with a 3 % origination fee, the lender deducts $750 from the proceeds, so you actually receive $24,250 in your account — but you owe interest on the full $25,000 principal and make payments on that full amount. This is why origination fees increase the true, all-in cost of borrowing above what the interest rate alone would suggest.

Calculating the total cost of credit

The total cost of credit is the origination fee plus every dollar of interest paid over the term. This number tells you the full premium you are paying for access to the funds, and it is the best way to compare two loan offers side by side when the rates and fees differ.

When a personal loan beats credit cards

A personal loan often makes financial sense when you can lock in an APR well below your credit card rates, especially if you carry balances month to month.

Debt consolidation: swapping high-APR cards for one fixed payment

Rolling several card balances with 19–25 % APRs into a single personal loan at 7–12 % APR can cut your monthly outlay and save thousands in interest, while also simplifying multiple bills into one predictable payment. The FTC cautions, however, that consolidation works only if you stop running up new charges on the cards you paid off — otherwise you end up deeper in debt.

Large planned purchases

For a major expense such as home repairs, a wedding or medical bills, a personal loan is almost always cheaper than carrying the balance on a rewards credit card, even after any signup bonus is factored in.

$25,000 personal loan, 8.9 % APR, 36-month term, 3 % origination fee ($750 deducted from proceeds).

  • Funds received in bank account = $25,000 − $750 = $24,250
  • Monthly P&I payment (8.9 %, 36 months) ≈ $795
  • Total of 36 payments ≈ $28,620
  • Total interest paid ≈ $3,620
  • Total cost of credit (origination + interest) ≈ $750 + $3,620 = $4,370

The same $25,000 carried on a 22.9 % credit card making only 2 % minimum payments would cost roughly $18,000 in interest and take more than 17 years to pay off — making the personal loan dramatically cheaper despite the origination fee.
